      Professional Certification Validates Hospitality Expertise

For more than 30 years, the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI) has been globally recognized as the preeminent leader in hospitality certification. With more than 20 professional certifications, hospitality professionals can turn to the Educational Institute to validate their industry knowledge and skills at every stage of their careers. Whether just starting out as a front desk representative or restaurant server, learning leadership skills as a supervisor, guiding a department as a manager, or overseeing operations as a general manager, every hospitality professional can earn recognition.

EI's program requirements vary for each professional certification. Most involve a time in position requirement, evidence of education, and completion of an examination. For many, study materials are included in the price of enrollment, while others have recommended resources offered for an additional fee. In many cases, study materials are available through online learning and most certifications exams can be taken online, too. For those who prefer the interaction of a study group, some certifications may have live review sessions at an industry or brand conference, followed by the proctored certification exam.

EI's first and most prestigious certification is the Certified Hotel Administrator (CHA).In the global hospitality industry, the CHA designation is the premier symbol of professional achievement for lodging executives.  Since the mid-1970s, the Educational Institute has awarded this designation to hospitality professionals whose leadership and managerial skills are exemplary-professionals who, by combining education and experience with dedication to the industry, have achieved a high level of expertise.

Roger Bloss, founder, CEO, and president of Vantage Hospitality Group, Inc., earned his CHA more than 25 years ago. "Earning the Certified Hotel Administrator designation at such a young age gave me an incredible amount of credibility among my more-experienced peers in the lodging industry," he explained. "As I've grown in my career, it compels me to keep up to date with our ever-changing industry."

He continued, "At Vantage, we not only encourage our members to earn their CHA, we encourage our corporate team to do so as well. Committing to studying, testing, and keeping up with your CHA will pay off for a lifetime and bring you a tremendous amount of pride."

The CHA and several of EI's other management certifications require designees to recertify every five years. To do this, they mustearn points by continuing their professional education and by sharing their expertise with others in the industry through professional involvement in activities. These include serving in industry associations, writing articles for professional trade journals, and taking or presenting workshops or seminars on topics of professional interest. This ensures that those who are certified remain up to date on the latest industry trends and processes.

"Professional certification raises the bar for hospitality industry performance, which benefits individuals, employers, investors, and most importantly, guests," says Robert L. Steele III, CHA, EI's president and COO.  "There are so many reasons to become certified, and none not to. Certification is one of the best moves a hospitality professional can make in his or her career."
