Challenge Exam

Take the Educational Institute Challenge!

If you've already gained hospitality knowledge through experience or past education, you can earn certificates from the AHLEI without ever taking a course. It's like "testing out" of the requirements. You save study time and enrollment dollars.  Simply take the Challenge Exam for the course(s) or Specialization of your choice-or challenge the Hospitality Operations Certificate or Hospitality Management Diploma!  The Challenge Exam tests your knowledge of the subjects covered in the respective course(s). If you pass with a grade of 70% or better, you receive the appropriate certificate and full academic credit. Enrollment in the Challenge Exam is available through the online Distance Learning application.

AHLEI's Guarantee-You can't lose!

If you purchase a Challenge Exam and do not pass, you may apply the cost of the examination to the current price of enrolling in the course or study program that you challenged. You pay only the difference between the cost of the Challenge Exam and the full price of the course or study program. So, you really can't lose with the Challenge Exam!  Please note that the Challenge Exam fees are non-refundable and nontransferable (except as described above).

Liberal Cancellation/Settlement Policy

We understand that personal and professional demands sometimes make continuation of a study program impossible. Be assured that our liberal cancellation policy protects you if you change your mind about your career or your studies. This policy is detailed on the back of the enrollment application. Do keep our "Interruption of Training" policy in mind if you ever consider the possibility of canceling.

Re-Enrollment Option and Fees

If, for any reason, you discontinue your studies, then decide you would like to start where you left off, AHLEI has an easy re-enrollment plan.  Contact us about your intent to re-enroll in a course or curriculum, pay a nominal re-enrollment fee of $35 for a single course of $50 for multiple courses, and resume your studies.  Any questions about this policy should be directed to the distance learning manager at learning@ahlei.org .

Retake Policy and Fees

If you do not successfully complete the final examination, you are entitled to one retake examination at no charge. A second retake may be taken for a charge of US $25.00. If you are not successful in completing the examination after the second retake, you have the option of requesting the challenge exam for the course (at a cost of US $110) or of re-enrolling in the course at the current fee.

What courses do you offer?

AHLEI offers individual courses that cover a variety of hospitality management topics, and also combines those courses into programs that lead to a more advanced curriculum certificate. This link explains the options available to Distance Learning students: https://ahlei.org/Programs/Distance-Learning/#courses

Upon completion of a course, what do I receive?

Once you successfully pass the course exam with a score of 70 percent or higher, you will receive a certificate of completion. IF you pass the final exam with a score of 90 percent or higher, your certificate will state "With Honors." For completion of our multiple-course curriculum programs, you receive a certificate for each individual course, as well as a framed certificate for the curriculum.

When does the course start?

As soon as your application is approved, you may begin your course.  Please click on this link to start your online enrollment application: https://dlearning.ahlei.org/

How much does it cost?

Please click on this URL for pricing options; https://www.ahlei.org/Programs/Distance-Learning/#enrollment

Are there payment plans available?

No at the moment, we do not have a payment plan available.  However, you can purchase course by course as you advance in your learning path.  We accept credit cards, checks, money orders, and wire transfers.

What is the time frame for completing each course?

From the day of course enrollment, you have 4 months to complete.  Distance learning is a self-paced program; progress depends on the amount of time you dedicate to your studies. Each course has approximately 40 hours of learning content. The welcome packet you receive with your course includes some helpful suggestions for breaking the course into manageable sections for more effective studying and learning.

What are my options if I fail the final exam for my course?

If you do not successfully complete the final examination, you are entitled to one retake examination at no charge. A second retake may be taken for a charge of US $25.00. If you are not successful in completing the examination after the second retake, you have the option of requesting the challenge exam for the course (at a cost of US $110) or of re-enrolling in the course at the current fee.

Can I re-enroll in a Distance Learning course or curriculum if my completion date has passed?

If, for any reason, you discontinue your studies, then decide you would like to start where you left off-you're in luck.  AHLEI has an easy re-enrollment plan.  Simply contact us about your intent to re-enroll in a course or curriculum, pay a nominal re-enrollment fee of $35 for a single course of $50 for multiple courses, and resume your studies.  It's as easy as that. Any questions about this policy should be directed to the distance learning manager at learning@ahlei.org .

Are there requirements for enrolling in Distance Learning?

No there are no requirements or prerequisites for enrollment, although we suggest that students be proficient at reading English.

What are the benefits of choosing the online exam over the in-person proctored exam?

Online exams will cut down on the amount of time spent in shipping exams back and forth; online retake exams are also conveniently provided instantly.  Physical, proctored exams require you to secure a proctor, arrange a testing time, and submit your exam by mail.  Scores are not provided over the phone, if the student has chosen the offline option.

Is there a price difference between choosing online studying or textbook studying?

No, the course enrollment now includes both textbooks and online course materials.  If you wish to get only online courses, the online application has an option for you to select.  However, the price remains the same.

Are there any discounts available?

At the moment we do not have any discounts. Your two options are purchasing single courses or purchasing an entire curriculum/program at once.

Do you accept financial aid?

No, because we are not a school, we do not offer or accept financial aid.

The online application is totaling the whole program. How do I manually choose the courses I want to take first?

If you prefer to pay as you go, choose the Individual Courses option in step 2 of the application. This will allow you to choose one or more courses manually.  The application will then total the price according to how many courses were chosen.  If you are already a distance learning student, please add " STU-(student number)" in the comments field of step 1.

How do I renew my student membership with AH&LA?

Student memberships are renewed annually through AH&LA's membership department. Please contact them at (800) 252-2462 or (202) 289-3100 or membership@ahla.com
