Johnson and Wales Student Receives CHART Scholarship

Orlando, Florida, July 2013—Jasmine Hurt, a senior in the hotel and lodging management program at Johnson & Wales University’s Miami, Florida, campus, is the winner of a $2500 scholarship awarded by the Council of Hotel and Restaurant Trainers (CHART) and the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF). The scholarship was presented by American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI) vice president for research and development Monique Donahue during the CHART summer conference in Miami, Florida.

Hurt is a 2010 graduate of the Monroe Career & Technical Institute in Bartonsville, Pennsylvania, where she was a member of the hospitality team that won first place in EI’s Lodging Management Program (LMP) International Competition that year.

As a hospitality student at Johnson & Wales, Hurt maintains a 3.4 GPA while working on a bachelor’s degree program that includes concentrations in resort management, cruise line management, and psychology. She is a member of DECA and treasurer of the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH) North Miami chapter. While maintaining a full-time academic schedule, she also works as a guest service representative at the Marriott Vacation Club-Beach Place Towers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Her goal is to become a director of operations at a Marriott property.

Hurt states that she has always had a passion to serve others and that “knowing how to treat a guest to make them feel respected, important, and treasured comes naturally to me. I love my career and I love hospitality because I know that what I do leaves an impact on people’s lives.”
