      FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Book Shares Stories of Century-Old Hotels

Lansing, Michigan, November 2013—The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI) has added a new book from author Stanley Turkel, CMHS, ISHC, to its online store. Built to Last: 100+ Year-Old Hotels East of the Mississippi is a charming tribute to historic properties both grand and quaint.

Hotel history buffs will delight in this new book that features 86 sections devoted to telling the tales of hotels that are at least 100 years old. Illustrated with antique picture postcards, the hotel histories include fascinating stories of single-minded developers, brilliant and accidental architects, dedicated owners, famous and infamous guests, and surprising features. For instance, did you know that the Greenbrier in West Virginia sits atop a 112,000-square-foot bunker built in the 1950s to protect the U.S. Congress in case of a nuclear attack? Or that the Grove Park Inn Resort & Spa in North Carolina was used as an internment center for Axis diplomats during World War II? Featured properties range from the 1639-room Parker House Hotel in Chicago to the 50-room Ocean House in Watch Hill, Rhode Island.

The book includes a foreword by Joseph A. McInerney, CHA, former president of the American Hotel & Lodging Association, who writes, “Stanley Turkel is one of the best writers I know at capturing our history—the old—and infusing it with new life and relevance. . . . In this latest book, he adds a wonderful chapter to the rich history we share.”

Built to Last: 100+ Year-Old Hotels East of the Mississippi is available for $19.95 from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute’s online store.
