      New Edition of Convention Textbook Highlights Industry Changes

      Lansing, Mich., September 2010 - To keep up with ongoing changes in the conventions and meetings industry, hospitality professionals and hospitality management students can rely on the new eighth edition of Convention Sales and Services, published by Waterbury Press and available for purchase from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (EI).

      Written by marketing consultant Milton T. Astroff and James R. Abbey, professor emeritus of hotel administration at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the eighth edition of this textbook offers expanded coverage of key industry trends, including the greening of meetings, new technology applications, social media, and the popularity of second-tier cities. There is an increased global perspective with international examples from Canada, Asia, and Europe; new special interest boxes featuring boutique hotels, positioning of conference centers, meeting rooms of the future, and a day in the life of a convention service manager. Industry examples, best practices, and case studies illustrate textbook concepts with real-world applications.

      The 18-chapter book is divided into two sections. In Part I, "Convention Sales," readers receive practical insight into different kinds of meetings and conventions, as well as advice and suggestions on how to reach and sell to key decision-makers in these markets. In Part II, "Convention Services," readers learn the basics of convention service and what it takes to ensure that every client's event flows smoothly from start to finish.
