      Educational Institute Honors Chad Gruhl as Outstanding U.S. Educator

      Chicago, Illinois, June 24, 2009 - Chad Gruhl, assistant professor and director of hotel management, hospitality, tourism, and events at Metropolitan State College of Denver, is the 2009 recipient of the Lamp of Knowledge Award for Outstanding Educator (U.S.), presented by the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute. Gruhl received the award during the AH&LA Summer Summit in Chicago, during the AH&LA Stars of the Industry Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, June 24.

      According to his nomination, Gruhl is a dynamic instructor who uses traditional and non-traditional teaching methods, including EI's CourseLine® program; innovative learning forums, and networking with industry professionals to engage his students and enhance the college's hospitality program. He has been instrumental is spearheading the addition of a fully-operational hotel on Metropolitan State College of Denver's campus to be run by students as a learning laboratory. When the 190-room hotel opens in 2011, MSCD will be one of only a few schools in the United States that owns and operates a hotel for the sole purpose of providing its hospitality graduates with on-site, hands-on learning experience.

      Gruhl has been a tenure-track faculty member at MSCD since 2006. He also teaches graduate business and management courses at Webster University in Denver. Prior to moving to Denver, Gruhl was a professor at Walnut Hill College and an adjunct professor at Holy Family University, both in Philadelphia. His hospitality experience includes positions as director of food and beverage at Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, NJ; manager of Oscar's Restaurant at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York; and manager of 525 Café and the mini-bar department at Hotel Inter-Continental in Chicago.

      Gruhl has a doctor of education degree from the University of Delaware; a master of science in management and leadership from Rosemont College (PA); and a bachelor of science in business management and hotel/restaurant management from Minnesota State University.
